Anthony Mackie will be portraying the iconic role of Falcon in the sequel CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Speaking to Coming Soon, Mackie said he considered the role to be very important as Falcon is one of Marvel’s first African-American characters. He also stated that he has landed his hands on some classic comics of the 1970s that feature Falcon and Captain America. The backstory is something that Mackie finds particularly interesting, as Sam Wilson (Falcon’s alter-ego) first went to LA to become a pimp and a drug dealer, but Mackie admitted he isn’t sure how much of those characteristics and plot details would appear in the upcoming film.
Mackie also spoke to Newsday last week, where he had this to say about his upcoming role:
I’m playing the Falcon. He’s this guy in Harlem who moved to California and became a drug dealer. His plane crashed, and he was genetically altered, and he can fly, has telepathic powers. He’s the first African-American superhero. It makes me feel all the work I’ve done has been paying off. I have a son, nephews and nieces, and I love the idea that they can dress up as the Falcon on Halloween. They now have someone they can idolize. That’s a huge honor for me.
Sounds as if we’ll get another memorable character, but let’s see a black character take the lead sometime soon. We’ve already got War Machine as a sidekick. Give us a BLACK PANTHER movie Marvel.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is released 4th April 2014. It stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, and Samuel L. Jackson.
