Dirty Dancing remake: Jennifer Grey has passed on appearing in the project.
The Dirty Dancing remake is set to be a three-hour-special on ABC in the near future.
So pretty hard-hitting news this Monday morning as the legendary Jennifer Grey has revealed that she will not be in the TV redo of her hit 1987 film Dirty Dancing. The actress, who was out and about promoting her new Amazon TV show Red Oaks, dropped the bombshell in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I was asked to do something on that show and I was flattered because I always want to be asked because it’s nice to want to be included. But for me, would be sacrosanct for me to do it because it didn’t feel appropriate to me. It feels like if you’re going to do your own thing, do your own thing. I wouldn’t say [what role] but I will tell you, it wasn’t Baby!”
Now, we’re Dirty Dancing nuts here at The Hollywood News, and not in an ironic way (read our report of the Secret Cinema Dirty Dancing event to back that right up). Abigail Breslin will actually be playing the role of Baby Houseman, the teenager who falls for her dance instructor Johnny Castle (originally played by Patrick Swayze) whilst on vacation at the holiday resort of Kellerman’s in Catskills, New York. Grey is very positive about the new version, a three-hour opus that will air on ABC in the US sometime in the future.
“I am always interested in any iteration of something where they feel there’s more to be gotten and I would love to see what it is that they come up with. Tommy Kail [Hamilton] directed it and I’m obsessed with Hamilton, so that’s thrilling to me. I think they’ve got wonderful actors in it. I’m going to be watching it and I’m excited. My only advice is to own it for yourself because we all just do our interpretation and I’m only flattered and excited for people who are excited enough to put their stamp on it and see what they make of it and how they make it their own.”
We’l bring you more on the new Dirty Dancing as it comes in. For now, let me take you right back to 1987 and the trailer for arguable the greatest dancing movie of all time.
