Happy 75th Birthday! Batman Gets It Off His Chest

Batman 1943

Believe it or not it has been 75 years since Batman was first launched onto the comic book market by Bob Kane and the brilliantly-named Bill Finger. Whether you see him as The Caped Crusader, The Dark Knight, The Bat Man or just plain “Batsy”, this uniquely dark, quirky creation has racked up close to a century of action-packed adventures and the cunning folks at HalloweenCostumes.com have come up with the perfect way to celebrate… a journey through nipple territory with the iconic Bat Symbol through the ages. Here’s the flap-tastic video they’ve produced in honour of today’s “Batman Day” festivities…

He’s undergone many changes of image over the decades and none more noticeably so than at the cinema. 1943’s BATMAN had Lewis Wilson as a spongy-cowled hero and the forthcoming BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE has Ben Affleck looking like an astonishing cross between an Alsatian and a granite turtle. Yet from classic movie serial to slick Zack Snyder blockbuster the basic look is always the same – cowl, cape and symbol.

My own personal preference is for Tim Burton’s 1989 gamechanger, which recently had its own 25th birthday. I saw that at the pictures 13 times and Christopher Nolan’s trilogy also received repeat visits. There’s just something brooding yet utterly daft about Batman, that has sustained him in such diverse fare as The Killing Joke and The Brave And The Bold. As for what I’ll be doing to toast the anniversary… I favour painting my eyes panda style and pretending to be Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne after a heavy night meting out pint-sized retribution…
