RESIDENT EVIL is easily the most successful video-game movie adaptation around having spawned several sequels with the exception of RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION each film has taken home more money than the last. The latest film in the franchise was originally penciled in for a September 2014 release but given that the script is still awaiting completion this obviously won’t be kept to. Director Paul W. S Anderson has been giving updates recently and revealed that this film could very well be the final one.

We brought you news back in April that the working title of the project was Rising however it turns out that it is actually RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER. With a name like that one could expect that this will be the last we see of Milla Jovovich’s Alice and her fight with the Umbrella Corporation but we should also remember that FREDDY’S DEAD: THE FINAL NIGHTMARE was followed with NEW NIGHTMARE. Whilst speaking to Collider Anderson had the following to say:

“RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER is the working title. It may end up being the final title, but that’s what’s written on the front page of my script… I’m right in the middle of [the first draft].”

Details regarding a release are yet to come with Anderson saying that it all depends on when the script is finished. He is planning on another 3D venture though, being one of the few directors to fully embrace the technology:

“I firmly believe that you have to start thinking about the 3D even in the writing process. You cannot make a great 3D movie by just—it’s not some special sauce that you can sprinkle on. You make the dish and then you make hot sauce on top—it doesn’t work well like that. Yes, you can do a last minute conversion. You cannot shoot the movie thinking about 3D and do a last minute conversion and it can be a 3D movie, it’s just not gonna be a great 3D movie. I approach my films right from the inception, I kind of write action scenes and pick out locations that I think and know—because I’ve done so much of it—will translate very well into 3D. Then when we build the sets, we build sets that I know will shoot well in 3D. It’s really, even from this point, 3D is something I’m definitely thinking about.”

Are you happy or sad about the news? I can’t help but feel that the series has been more than a little hit-or-miss, personally I think that the first and RESIDENT EVEIL: EXTINCTION are the best whilst the last outing RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION was awful – though it was watched the same day as LOOPER so it had a lot to compete with. Given the poorness of the last film I would say that it is about time that the series got re-tired and Jovovich could do with finding something a little less stunt coordinated again.
