In a bit of news that you could be forgiven to think was a VERY delayed April Fools joke, it has been reported today that Robin Williams and original director Chris Columbus are set to be on board a sequel for the 1993 cross dressing nanny smash hit, MRS. DOUBTFIRE. Fox 2000 are currently developing the script with screenwriter David Berenbaum (ELF, THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES) currently writing a draft. The original film portrayed an out of work, divorced actor, David Hillard (Robin Williams) who in a desperate attempt to see his kids more dresses up as an old Scottish nanny…as you do (a premise which was hilariously spoofed in ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT).
This has to be the most absurd bit of news since the sequel to TWINS was being brought up. First of all, while the original film is a decent family friendly 90s film, it has a pretty rounded out ending, so where do you take it from here? Hillard bringing the suit out of storage to connect with his grandchildren? It just seems a bit forced. Second of all, does anyone really want to watch a sequel to this?
I’m yet to experience anyone saying ‘Gee, I really wish they would make a sequel to Mrs. Doubtfire, I just feel like there is so much mileage left in that character‘. The first one made good money, but that was 21 years ago. Hey, I may be proven wrong and I usually keep an open mind about things, this just doesn’t seem like a great idea…at all.
What do you guys think? Are you excited to see this?
