Richard Ayoade may still be best known for his comic performances in the likes of The IT Crowd and Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, but his directorial debut SUBMARINE raised enough eyebrows to gather some serious attention. His second feature looks like an organic progression, as he mixes dark visuals and humour as Jesse Eisenberg deals with his almost exact double. The only problem is that nobody else seems to notice the connection and his doppelganger seems to be more accomplished and popular in every single way.
And as is often the case, life has imitated art with THE DOUBLE getting its own double in the similarly themed ENEMY starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Both have some serious talent behind them and look like they are both worth some serious watchness. Besides that, many superhero fans will be watching Eisenberg for essence of Lex Luthor in the upcoming sequel to MAN OF STEEL.
THE DOUBLE is released on the 4th April in the UK and has a limited release on 9th May in the US. It stars Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, James Fox, Wallace Shawn, Chris O’Dowd, Sally Hawkins, Yasmine Paige, Gemma Chan, and Noah Taylor.
