The original WEST SIDE STORY movie adaptation is in the top three movies for winning the most Academy Awards with eleven to its name. The film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1997, and the original stage production still tours around the world to this day. Now it looks like Steven Spielberg wants to remake it.
The story is loosely based around Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and originally hit Broadway in 1957, with a book by Arthur Laurents and music by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
The legendary filmmaker is at the ‘expressing interest’ stage at the moment, and we have no idea if he will produce or direct, or even as to what angle he’ll take, if he takes it on at all. Still, its intriguing that he’s looking at the property as, after all, he’s not made a musical before.
