David Bowie & Chi McBride Offered Recurring Roles In ‘Hannibal’

Hannibal - Season 1

If you’re yet to chomp into NBC’s acclaimed dark detective drama HANNIBAL, you’re seriously missing out. The series, based on author Thomas Harris’ charming cannibalistic serial-killer and superbly adapted by Bryan Fuller, has just been given a season two order and we’re certainly eager to see more of the ‘good’ Dr. Lecter’s blossoming friendship with troubled FBI profiler Will Graham. The show is so rich in character development and outstanding central performances from Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy, you almost forget the boogeyman’s past ‘adventures’ on the big-screen!

Fuller has just confirmed he’s approached legendary singer/actor David Bowie to take a recurring role on the show as the psychopath’s uncle, Robert. A character killed off early in Harris’ novels, but the modern setting of the series allows for many changes.

We have reached out to David Bowie to see if he’s interested and available. We would love for him to play Hannibal’s uncle, who is a character from the literature and in the books. We don’t have an answer yet. Since our timeline is a little more present,  there’s a little bit of J.J. Abrams-style alternate universe storytelling where he could still be alive.

The showrunner also was to bring in the character of Baltimore Asylum orderly Nurse Barney into the mix, previously played by Frankie Faison in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, HANNIBAL and RED DRAGON (the actor also featured in Michael Mann’s first outing for the killer, MANHUNTER, in a different role). He’s hinted his PUSHING DAISIES star Chi McBride is favourite for the role.

That will be some fun stunt casting. I would love to bring in Chi McBride, if he’s available. There are so many great actors I would love to work with.

Would you like to see Bowie and McBride bite into those roles? Do let us know. HANNIBAL Season 2 will begin production in August

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
