Say what you like about James Cameron’s high-grossing film of all-time, AVATAR, but there is no denying the futuristic action fantasy was yet another bold step forward into the future of filmmaking and one of the few 3D experiences that was genuinely effective. Cameron has always tried to break new ground in film, which sometimes comes at a cost to his bland script work. However, when you consider the strides made with the previous visual evolution of the likes of THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS, THE ABYSS, T2 and TITANIC, few can argue that he is indeed an master of his craft in creating a cinematic spectacle.
I’ve yet to speak to anyone who is genuinely excited for another visit to Pandora, but I’ve no doubt the two AVATAR sequels currently in development are sure to fill multiplexes once again. Producer Jon Landau has today revealed at the 2013 NAB Technology Summit on Cinema that Cameron will attempt to blow our minds by taking the art motion-caputre performance to new depths.
He will do performance capture in water. We want to take advantage of the technologies brilliant people are putting out to make the next two movies even more emotionally engaging and visually tantalising, and to really wrap up the story arc of our two main characters.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
