The unlikely choice of Sacha Baron Cohen, BORAT and BRUNO, has been circling a biopic of the Queen frontman for quite some time now. Despite his involvement and that of FROST/NIXON screenwriter Peter Morgan, the film has failed to attract and keep a director. Many names have been bounded around, such as Stephen Frears, the director of THE QUEEN (not about the seminal rock band). It is now being reported that Tom Hooper may be jumping on board after his successful adaptation of LES MISERABLES. Hooper worked with Cohen on that film, so perhaps the two have built a strong enough relationship to tackle one of the world’s greatest entertainers.
It has been hinted by producer Graham King that Cohen will be taking on full singing duties, which would be incredibly brave of him. No matter what, at least it isn’t an adaptation of WE WILL ROCK YOU.
