A current contentious issue throughout the US and the UK is the extraction of gas from the Earth (known as fracking), being heralded as a new way of creating energy using the planets resources. Unfortunately, many don’t see it that way as the heavy machinery used for drilling is detriment to the environment, having a knock-on effect in bringing tremors and causing earthquakes. The controversial methods are being explored in Gus Van Sant’s Oscar-buzzed drama PROMISED LAND.
Written by and starring Matt Damon and John Krasinski, the film tells of corporate business partners (Damon and Oscar-winner Francis McDormand) who aim to persuade a small town struggling with the economy to allow their company to tap into their untouched resources. They face complications from a respected schoolteacher (Hal Holbrook) and the residents begin to argue on taking a big money offer at the expense of their towns beauty and safety.
Here we have seven clips from the film, which is slated for cinemas in the US from the 4th December and the UK from 19th April 2013.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
