We reported late on Monday evening that Kenny Ortega is all set to direct a brand new version of DIRTY DANCING, a move that personally I’m all for, despite my love for the late, great Patrick Swayze. It seems that I’m not on my own in my thoughts on this as the original Baby, Jennifer Grey, is also very positive for the plans to remake the movie after tweeting about the subject.
“I love @Kennyortega and trust that he will do something special #DirtyDancingRemake,” she tweeted on Tuesday.
She also provided a statement to the Wall Street Journal: “I’m so excited about this news and I think there’s nobody better to do this than my beloved Kenny Ortega, who is as responsible as anyone for the success of the first one. I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do with it.”
Ortega choreographed the original version of the film, so if there was anyone for suitable to direct the new film, it’s him. Ortega directed HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL and the Michael Jackson documentary, THIS IS IT.
The original ‘Dancing’ make well over $200 million at the box office, and spawned a sequel and musical, which has just ended its London run after a massive 5 years.
DIRTY DANCING will go into production for a probable late 2012 release.
