Star Wars: The Force Awakens Has Passed Avatar’s Domestic Box Office Record

Star Wars Avatar

Regular readers will probably be getting tired of hearing about how many records Star Wars: The Force Awakens has broken. However, it appears that the rest of the world are still watching the film in droves as it continues to dominate the box office across the globe.

J.J. Abrams’ science fiction sequel currently holds over thirty box office records, yet it still continues to surpass every expectation and soar even higher than previously imagined. The Force Awakens is now officially the highest grossing film in the US, as it has just overtaken James Cameron‘s Avatar.

With almost $800 million at the domestic box office and over $1.5 Billion at the worldwide box office, the latest lightsaber dueling adventure seems to be unstoppable. The only question that now remains is whether or not the film will take James Cameron’s crown for the number one worldwide top spot! Although the latter currently holds the record with $2.78 Billion, all signs are pointing towards an extremely close final tally for Star Wars.

Although this news is absolutely fantastic for fans of the franchise, it also comes with the bitter realization that it will almost certainly never reach these heights again. With Disney and Lucasfilm now planning to release a Star Wars film every year (in the same vein as Pixar and Marvel), the godlike ‘event’ status of the film may never be regained.

Having said that, this is a small price to pay for a yearly visit to a galaxy far, far away. With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story due to begin a yearly trend of Star Wars prequels, spin-off’s and sequels this Christmas, the franchise has never been healthier.

The memory of Jar Jar Binks and the prequel trilogy is slowly getting farther away…
