Benicio Del Toro was once set to enter space as the principle villain in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, but pulled out before production began. However, it would seem as though space is still calling the esteemed actor, as he has now been cast in James Gunn’s Marvel science-fiction adventure, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Benicio Del Toro joins Guardians Of The Galaxy straight after the news of Karen Gillan’s casting as the lead female villain. Although the character which Del Toro will play is being kept a secret, it is being reported that he will be optioned for multiple Marvel movies. After Thanos appeared at the end of THE AVENGERS, it has been hotly discussed as to his role in future motion pictures, and although Thanos is closely linked to many of the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, it is generally accepted that he will go up against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in THE AVENGERS 2.
Del Toro certainly has the command and presence to excel as a huge recurring villain, and he can certainly use that voice for a powerful effect. Personally, I think he was born to take on a villainous comicbook role, and although great, the role of Jackie Boy in SIN CITY just wasn’t enough.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is released 1st August 2014. It is directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Lee Pace, Ophelia Lovibond, Glenn Close, John C. Reilly, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro and Dave Bautista.
