I’ve seen a great number of decent (and dire) films since I originally caught Nicolas Winding Refn’s DRIVE in the summer of 2011, yet none have matched the intensity and gripping nature of the simplistic ‘knight in shining armour’ modern premise of the Ryan Gosling-led thriller. In fact, I’d go so far to say the violent noir is easily the best film of the last two years and you can throw in all the Oscar-winners you like. DRIVE should have driven away with all the awards.
The director and lead reunite for another vicious onslaught for ONLY GOD FORGIVES, which gets its premiere later this month at Cannes Film Festival. Gosling is Julian, a man running a major drug operation in a kickboxing club in Thailand after gunning down a police officer back in the US. However, when his brother is slaughtered by a corrupt cop (Vithaya Pansringarm), he’s forced by his mobster mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) to seek vengeance.
Check out the latest French poster for the film hitting US cinemas 19th July but still no word on a UK date, yet!

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
