A trailer has landed for Treasure, a new drama/ comedy heading to cinemas in the U.S. this summer after a fairly positive festival debut starting in Berlin back in February. The feature stars Stephen Fry and Lena Dunham as a father and daughter who travel to Fry’s character’s homeland of Poland for the first time since his family fled the country for the U.S. during World War II.
The official synopsis for this one is as follows.
A father-daughter road trip set in 1990s Poland, TREASURE follows Ruth (Dunham), an American music journalist, and her father, Edek (Fry), a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor, on a journey to his homeland. While Ruth is eager to make sense of her family’s past, Edek embarks on the trip with his own agenda. This emotional, funny culture clash of two New Yorkers exploring post-socialist Poland is a powerful example of how reconnecting with family and the past can be an unexpected treasure.
I really rather liked this film after catching it in Berlin. I wrote in my original review; ‘While there might be a little too much comedic sprinkling for this to land as big an emotional punch, there is lots to take away from this involving drama including superb performances from its two leads.’ You can read the rest of my thoughts here.
While the film await a UK release, stateside audiences can catch this from June 14th.
Here’s the trailer.
