Del Toro Gives Details About Upcoming Horror ‘Crimson Peak’

We’ve received a wealth of content and information recently regarding visual director Guillermo del Toro and more specifically, his alien-invasion epic PACIFIC RIM. Now we know the CRONOS and HELLBOY filmmaker’s next film will see him return to the horror genre for the first time since the troubled MIMIC with CRIMSON PEAK.

It has been rumoured the film was a re-worked project entitled HELL HOUSE, one that del Toro brainstormed with frequent collaborator Matthew Robbins a number of years ago. Now, he’s clarified what to expect from CRIMSON PEAK.

CRIMSON PEAK is not Hell House at all. Nothing could be further from that. CRIMSON PEAK is a spec script Matthew and I wrote right after Pan’s Labyrinth. It stayed mostly under the radar but I have been pushing it quietly. Universal has been very supportive and wanted to do it. It’s set at the turn of the century and it is a Gothic romance with ghosts. When I use the Gothic romance term I use it not in the Barbara Cartland model but rather in a Bronte fashion. Dark and stormy and wind-swept.

This is my first foray into horror since Sci-Fi/Horror Mimic. The Devil’s Backbone was more of an essay on ghosts than a ghost story and, except as producer, I have not returned to scary stuff in a long time. Glad you guys are jazzed. So am I!!

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
