Guy love is all around us these days. You can feel it in your fingers, you can probably even feel it in your toes. The time has come for us members of the not-so-fair sex to embrace the joys of manhood we can share together. As such, it seems only fitting to bring you Top 5 Movie Bromances. Now, everyone knows that I am Mr. Mainstream, and these are purely my own personal top five faves, but I’m sure you’ll relate to some of them…
Let’s kick it off…
5. Mike Lowry and Marcus Burnett – BAD BOYS
Possibly one of my favourite Michael ‘Bang Bang’ Bay movies to have ever graced the silver screen, but the thing that really works with this movie is the central ‘bro’ relationship between the two main characters, played by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. In fact, I prefer the sequel, which is so ridiculously insane… it’s awesome. The following scene sums up the duo’s relationship in the movies. Bring on number three…
4. Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh – LETHAL WEAPON
The original and best Shane Black duo of Riggs and Murtaugh are probably who the aforementioned Lowry and Riggs owe a lot to, and I agree, thus putting them a spot ahead on my all-time movie bromance list. Through four films ‘crazy’ Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) solved cases with his “I’m too old for this shit” partner Roger Murtaugh, bonding more than a tube of No More Nails. Since 1998 audiences (well, me), have been screaming for a new adventure for the unlikely duo. Somehow, I think that’s not on the cards now… Still, we still have the likes of this… and c’mon, how many of your mates would you pull off the crapper if it had a bomb attached to it? “Smile and blow me, ‘cos I deserve it!”
3. Bodhi and Johnny Utah – POINT BREAK
This testosterone fuelled movie feature on The Hollywood News continues, and yes I know that two of these bromances are featured in the film HOT FUZZ, but boy were Pegg and Wright on the money. First came BAD BOYS II, and now here’s the bromance between criminal Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) and FBI agent Johnny Utah (KEANU REEVES), the man with perhaps the coolest name in movie history. So strong is their bond that when the moment of truth comes where Utah has the opportunity to blow a number of caps in the ass of Swayze’s Bodhi, he just cannot bring himself to do it. Legendary scenes. I could post that ‘firing of the gun in the air’ scene, or the walk away scene from the climax of the movie, but instead I choose to go with this awesome mash-up video, POINT BREAKBACK MOUNTAIN.
2. Han Solo and Chewbacca – THE STAR WARS TRILOGY
Not one to promote intergalactic beastiality, but this is second best display of bromance on the silver screen in the last thirty years. Slightly outdoing C-3PO and R2D2 on the old bromance front is this choice from the holy trilogy, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca. These two have been travelling the galaxy for decades together with just a crusty cockpit and phaser for company. There’s no beating the true power of the force, the indestructable Han and Chewie.
1. Maverick and Goose – TOP GUN
There really could be only one. The ultimate movie bromance… Maverick (Tom Cruise) and Goose (Anthony Edwards) in the 1986 Tony Scott movie TOP GUN. Cue the music, cue the muscle… cue that volleyball scene… Every kid wanted to be Maverick when they were younger (I still do now), but really there can be no Maverick with out Goose. The ultimate wingman…
