Deleted Scene To Reveal Bane’s Mask Origin? (Mild Spoilers)

With THE DARK KNIGHT RISES continuing to storm the box-office, we’ve still got a long wait for the DVD release. However, that doesn’t stop rumours circulating as to what should and shouldn’t be considered a ‘special feature’. Case in point? The origin of Bane’s mask.

Costume designer Linda Hemming, who worked with Christopher Nolan on Bane’s look, has spoken out about the mask’s making and a little back story on Tom Hardy’s character. On Bane’s original injuries (which he received while trying to save someone):

‘The other thing that you should have seen during that sequence is [Bane] being injured in his youth. So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury. Even if he hasn’t got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he’s learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he’s wearing an early version of his waist belt. It’s showing support, but it’s not the finished one he eventually wears. He’s also wearing an early version of his gas mask, all glued together.’

At the time of the interview’s printing, Hemming hadn’t seen TDKR so had no idea of Nolan’s editing sequence. However, she goes on to say that there was a scene where Hardy is on a wooden platform, being taunted and tortured by his fellow inmates. She also mentions that there was a scene which details why Bane wears his mask and where it came from.

I am a huge Nolan/TDKR fan, so I’ll be preordering my copy of the DVD well in advance. And as a fan, it’d be great to see the back story of Batman’s nemesis, even if it’s only a few minutes long. But, since it’s a Nolan creation, it probably isn’t. What other ‘deleted scenes’ would you like to see featured? Let us know!

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
