So 2012 is here, and with it comes the anticipation for a whole new year’s worth of event cinema. Not least of all is THE HUNGER GAMES, the latest film from director Gary Ross.
Lionsgate will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of HARRY POTTER and TWILIGHT with THE HUNGER GAMES, which is based on a successful series of fantasy novels by Suzanne Collins. With the reliable Ross in the director’s chair and a strong cast, it’s likely THE HUNGER GAMES will live up to the hype and kick off cinema’s new favourite franchise. Sequels have already been discussed, and would be based on the follow-up novels ‘Catching Fire’ and ‘Mockingjay’.
THE HUNGER GAMES is set in a dystopian future, in which North America is divided into twelve ‘districts’. each year one boy and a girl is chosen from each to participate in a televised fight to the death. The story follows Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) who volunteers to take the place of her younger sister in the games. Unfortunately, Katniss is unprepared, and faces a number of opponents who have been training for the event their whole lives.
Check out these all-new images from the film, one of which features co-stars Woody Harrelson and Lenny Kravitz. Harrelson plays Haymitch Abernathy, a former winner of the games, and Kravitz plays Cinna, Katniss’ stylist for the televised event.
THE HUNGER GAMES co-stars Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, and Wes Bentley. It arrives in UK cinemas 23rd March 2012.
