Netflix’s festive family adventure The Christmas Chronicles was released on the streaming platform a couple of weeks ago to pretty decent reviews. Well, it seems to have struck a chord with viewers as well as the film reportedly received a huge 20 million streams in its first week out there.
Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos announced the news of the massive streaming figure at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference. Business Insider reports: “Even in his successful career, [Kurt Russell] has never had that many people see one of his movies in the first week ever,” Sarandos said. “That’s a testimony to what we can bring to the market for storytellers today that we couldn’t have ten years ago.”
If that were to be compared to box-office figures – which is obviously quite difficult – that would have given the film an approximate $200 million first week! “Even movies that go on to $1 billion don’t typically do that in the first week,” Sarandos added.
The film follows two siblings, troubled teen Teddy (Judah Lewis) and enthusiastic 10 year-old Kate Pierce (Darby Camp) who have grown apart since their Dad passed away earlier in the year. When Teddy is forced to babysit his sister on Christmas Eve, the two end up hatching a plan to catch footage of the real Santa Claus delivering presents, much to Teddy’s indifference. All that changes when they actually catch Santa (Kurt Russell) in the act. But when their interference causes Santa to crash and lose both his sack of presents and his reindeer, Teddy and Kate must help Santa finish the night and keep the Christmas spirit alive!
