One of our favourite films at this year’s Berlin Film Festival was Terence Davis‘ superb A Quiet Passion, and it has just had an official UK premiere date. Metrodome have the UK rights and will release the film nationwide on November 18th, 2016.
The period piece is the dramatic and moving life story of the iconic American poet Emily Dickinson (expertly played by Cynthia Nixon), from her youth as a headstrong schoolgirl to her reclusive adulthood where poetry was her solace.
Born in Amherst Massachusetts in 1830, Emily Dickinson’s magnificent poetry captured all the terror and beauty of the world, distilled down to the quintessence of meaning and expression.
A remarkable cast is led by Cynthia Nixon as Emily Dickinson, with Jennifer Ehle as her sister Vinnie, and Keith Carradine as her father.
We gave the film a five-star review at the festival. We said that ‘Nixon mesmerises in a career-best role as Dickinson. It’s another example of the actress undergoing a career transformation with her work of late – see also a scene stealing supporting role in last year’s BFI London Film Festival favourite James White. She is flawless in this film with every word spoken like a note from a perfectly tuned instrument, played perfectly from Davies’s entrancing score. Reserved a spot at next year’s Oscars.’
A Quiet Passion is a worthy addition to small, but perfectly formed career portfolio of Davis, and could just be his best film for many years.
We loved it. Check out our full review over here.
