Justin Lin is associated with high octane fare, having helmed four entries in the FAST AND FURIOUS franchise… Captain Kirk and his team have certainly seen many a scrape… But in what some might view as a surprise move, Lin is heading to Starfleet Academy as he takes over from Roberto Orci as director on STAR TREK 3. Not much is known about what the threequel will involve, though it’ll probably see Lin reuniting with John Cho (Sulu) – the pair previously worked together on SHOPPING FOR FANGS and BETTER LUCK TOMORROW.
While action fans are doubtless well-catered for, a slight note of caution can be sounded when it comes to the interplay between the crew. Lin has brought us dramas like ANNAPOLIS with James Franco but is he the right man to succeed J.J.Abrams, who delivered intelligence as well as explosions? The answer may lay in an unlikely place. For though FAST AND FURIOUS is on the meatheaded side, it does boast a strong ensemble cast – so Lin could be adept at balancing character and situation. Paramount is hoping cinemas will be set to stun when the movie finally docks into spaceport.
