TV Review: Fargo ‘The Heap’ [SPOILERS]

fargo

Director: Scott Winant

Writer: Noah Hawley

Cast: Martin Freeman, Allison Tolman, Colin Hanks, Billy Bob Thornton, Bob Odenkirk, Keith Carradine, Joshua Close, Kate Walsh

Synopsis: Lester Nygaard reinvents himself and Deputy Molly Solverson just can’t ignore her findings.

So I found this week’s episode of Fargo to be a little slow and dare I say…dull. It was pretty much just about Lester Nygaard reinventing himself.  It begins with him buying a swanky new washing machine and follows him clearing out all of Pearl’s stuff from his house. Lorne Malvo visits Mr Wrench in hospital and literally sets him free after killing his guard.  He tells him a story of a bear that had to chew his leg free from a trap so he could die of his own accord.  Foreshadowing maybe?

Deputy Molly Soverson tries to persuade Chief Bill Oswalt that they have the wrong man but it doesn’t make any difference.  The episode then jumps ahead a year and we see a heavily pregnant Solverson living with Gus Grimly, who is now a post man, and his daughter Greta.  She is still obsessed with solving the case but it seems that everything is falling on deaf ears.

Nygaard has become a new man, he has married his co-worker and got himself a new haircut and some swanky clothes.  He is in Vegas and has just won an award for salesman of the year.  The episode ends with Nygaard eyeing up the ladies at the bar as his new wife sleeps in their room.  He hears a familiar voice and spots a very different looking Malvo entertaining a small group.  You can change your look but you cannot change how you got there. That about sums everything up.

Like I mentioned on other reviews, I really don’t know how this series will end.  Nygaard must get his comeuppance, I don’t know how but I know the writers will come up with something entertaining.  I have a feeling Malvo disappearing like a ghost throughout the series is a hint to his character just fading away. It’s nice to see that Grimly is finally working his dream job of being a post man.  He was always a little awkward as a police officer and he knew it.  With Solverson heavily pregnant, this ties in nicely with the original FARGO film. Nygaard becoming the successful man he always wanted to be is interesting as the road he took to get there was full of blood and lies. At this point he feels that he is untouchable, he has the life he so envied his brother Chazz for. And what of Chazz? Is he just going to rot away in jail for crimes he didn’t commit.  He wasn’t the nicest guy but surely he doesn’t deserve that.

With only two episodes left, it seems there is a lot to cover.  How they do it, we will have to wait and see.
