While a sequel for Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s smash hit THE LEGO MOVIE is already in the works over at Warner Bros, we may see the world’s favourite building blocks hit the screen in another form before that project comes to fruition – in the form of the long-gestating LEGO NINJAGO movie, centred around the Danish toy company’s ninja-themed world.
Warner is currently deciding which film to go ahead with first, as they currently only hold the rights to one sequel or spin-off – so it’s a question of which they want to move ahead with more, against which is more likely to secure them the rights to further films. At the moment, producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee have the option to take future movies to other studios, but by committing to the LEGO world with NINJAGO, Warner can strengthen their relationship with LEGO to ensure future films.
While a NINJAGO film would likely be more action-oriented than THE LEGO MOVIE, it’s interesting that Warner is looking to build a LEGO cinematic universe in this way. Might we see a girl-focused LEGO FRIENDS movie in future to offset the boy-centric NINJAGO? Only time will tell.
LEGO’s Ninjago theme already has a footing with the Cartoon Network series Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, so it’s no wonder Warner are looking to it for their first spin-off. Lin and Lee are on board to produce, with Lord and Miller also taking production roles – while TRON: UPRISING’s Charlie Bean will direct from a Dan and Kevin Hageman script.
Stay tuned for more on future LEGO movies, and be sure to catch THE LEGO MOVIE, starring Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett and Morgan Freeman, in cinemas everywhere now.
