With J.J. Abrams having gone where no man has gone before and departing for a galaxy far, far away, we’re now going to spend the next few months/years speculating who will replace him as the director of STAR TREK 3. Recently there have been a number of rumours circulating, with G.I. JOE: RETALIATION director Jon M. Chu suggested as a possible replacement for Abrams, but his representative has denied this claim and it would have forced Chu to pull out of G.I. JOE 3.
A new name has started to float around and that is RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES director Rupert Wyatt. Wyatt has been circling a number of projects ever since turning down DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, but is yet to settle on a definite project. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will write the screenplay without Damian Lindelof, and Abrams will continue in the role of producer.
STAR TREK 3 certainly needs a strong director to continue the franchise and Wyatt has proven himself with a big-budget franchise before. Chu, with a background in dance/music films, is probably more suited to he enjoyable but silly G.I. JOE FRANCHISE. But who knows, maybe George Lucas will swap his stars.
