James ” King Of The World” Cameron is saving his judgement haymakers for bigger fish than just the comically entertaining PIRANHA 3D, which you’ll recall saw the AVATAR director call ” degrading”.
Mr Cameron told a German website that no film currently released better embodies Hollywood’s creative bankruptcy than Universal’s high-budget adaptation of BATTLESHIP. “We have a story crisis. Now they want to make the Battleship game into a film,” said Cameron to Spiegel. “This is pure desperation.” Just wait until the man himself finds out it co-stars Rihanna and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model.
Cameron continued, via translation: “Everyone in Hollywood knows how important it is that a film is a brand before it hit theaters. If a brand has been around, HARRY POTTER for example, or SPIDER-MAN, you are light years ahead. And there lies the problem. Because unfortunately these franchises are become more ridiculous. BATTLESHIP. This degrades the cinema.”
Of course it’s obvious that Cameron means the application of 3D to enhance merely spectacle worries him greatly and means to suggest that without story it’s all fairly redundant and, if I’m honest, he’s probably right about the franchises… is there no originality left in Hollywood? Where are the ” new” stories?
I’m with Cameron, let’s get back to telling new stories…
