Sean Baker’s ‘Anora’ takes the Palme d’Or at Cannes

Sean Baker’s crowd-pleaser Anora has taken the top award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the Palme d’Or. The film, which screened in competition earlier this week, revolves around an exotic dancer, played by Mikey Madison, and her romance with the son of a Russian oligarch. 

The Jury of the 77th Festival de Cannes was chaired by director, screenwriter and actress Greta Gerwig, alongside Turkish screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan, American actress Lily Gladstone, French actress Eva Green, Lebanese director and screenwriter Nadine Labaki, as well as Spanish director and screenwriter Juan Antonio Bayona, Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu and French actor and producer Omar Sy.

22 films played in competition at this yer’s event.

George Lucas was give the honorary Palme d’Or at the event, presented to him by friend and fellow icon Francis Ford Coppola.

Adriana Paz, Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon and Selena Gomez  won Best Actress as a collective for the applauded Emilia Pérez, while Jesse Plemons won Best Actor for Kinds of Kindness. Best director went to Miguel Gomes for Grand Tour.

Mohammad Rasoulof won Special Prize for The Seed of the Sacred Fig while Payal Kapadia’s film, All We Imagine as Light, won the Grand Priz.

The Substance, one of our big faves from the fest, scored Best Screenplay.
