Secretariat

Where better to start than with the 2010 American sports drama film Secretariat. This was released by Walt Disney pictures and written by Mike Rich and Sheldon Turner. Overall the film received mixed reviews and earned $60.3 million from its budget of $35 million.

The movie itself covered the life of iconic thoroughbred race horse Secretariat. He of course was the winner of the triple crown in 1973 and still to this day is regarded as one of the greatest race horses of all time. The movie shows the incredible moment in which the horse puts in one of the greatest performances of all time in winning the Belmont stakes by 31 lengths from another star in Sham. This moment will be remembered from racing fans forever.

Overall this film covers his record breaking career well and is worth a watch for sports fans.

Ruffian

Next on the list is the 2007 American film that tells the story of a U.S. Racing hall of fame Champion filly in Ruffian. The horse is possibly not as known as the others in the list but was a true great. The movie was made by ESPN Original Entertainment and directed by Yves Simoneau. This followed on from their broadcast back in 2000 covering the 25th anniversary of the death of the horse.

Ruffian is ranked as one of the greatest of all time and won 10 consecutive races, most by wide margins. She was awarded the US Champion two and three-year-old filly awards in both 1974 and 1975. On her final start she was set to race Kentucky Derby Winner Foolish Pleasure but unfortunately broke down. This later resulted in her having to be euthanized.

This movie was a nice adaptation of her stunning career that was cut short. Could she have gone on to be the greatest of all time? This 2007 movie is another worth watching for sport and racing fans.

Seabiscuit

The final movie to make the select list is a must watch in the 2003 hit film, Seabiscuit. Directed by Gary Ross, the movie is based on the best selling book Seabiscuit: An American legend. It had a budget of $87 million and made $148.3 million and went on to be nominated for seven academy awards.

Seabiscuit was such a popular sensation as the underdog story of racing. The horse was only able to win four of his first 40 races before going on to become a champion. This was in the period of the Great Depression in which the horse became a symbol of hope for many. Moving to a different trainer the horse would go on to win many races including the great match race in which he beat the 1937 triple crown winner War Admiral by four lengths. He would go on to be voted the American horse of the year in 1938.

This movie is a brilliant adaptation of the comeback story of Seabiscuit and a must watch for sports and movie fans on a whole.
