Skeksis meets Netflix: ‘The Dark Crystal’ returns

Cult fantasy The Dark Crystal is set to be revived at Netflix, this time as a prequel series.

The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance tells the story of what happened before the events of Jim Henson‘s 1982 movie. Taking us back to the planet of Thra, it focuses on a quest by a trio of gentle Gelflings to defeat the crystal-fuelled tyranny of the wizened Skeksis race.

Age Of Resistance aims to bring the world created by Henson and artist Brian Froud to the streaming generation. A proposed follow-up, The Power Of The Dark Crystal, was abandoned as a film a few years back. The ten episode run will be written by Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, and Javier Grillo-Marxuach, who are also executive producers alongside Lisa Henson and The Jim Henson Company.

They are joined by Now You See Me helmer Louis Leterrier, who will direct the saga. It’ll be interesting to see how the combination of the sinister and fantastical fares in this new incarnation.

Here’s the teaser trailer:

Steve is a journalist and comedian who enjoys American movies of the 70s, Amicus horror compendiums, Doctor Who, Twin Peaks, Naomi Watts and sitting down. His short fiction has been published as part of the Iris Wildthyme range from Obverse Books.
