‘300’ TV series coming from Zack Snyder

This is SPARTA! Again.

Some big news now for fans of Zack Snyder as it is being reported that a 300 TV series is on the way from the filmmaker and Warner Bros. Television. Snyder, of course, helmed the 2006 Gerard Butler-led movie, groundbreaking in terms of its dazzling special effects and swords and sandals action. It’s also Snyder’s best movie IMHO.

300 TV series
The 2006 300 movie, led by Gerard Butler, was a huge hit for Warner Brothers.

Variety broke the news of the planned 300 TV series late on Friday but added that there are no plot details currently available as that’s all still very much being worked out by all involved. There are hints that it might be a prequel series to the 2006 movie.

We say ‘all involved’ but Snyder is the only name attached to the project at the moment and no writers or other talent are currently locked in. Snyder is expected to direct and executive produce the series along with Deborah Snyder who will also executive produce.

The original 2006 movie was based on the graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley and cost a reported $60 million to bring to the screen. It grossed well over $450 million and spawned a sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire, which was released in 2014.

The film revolves around Butler’s Leonidas who must lead an army of Spartans to battle the Persian “God-King” Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his invading army of more than 300,000 soldiers.

The movie was shot using the latest chromakey technology with the filmmakers shooting against green screens to match the visual style of the source material. This resulted in a reported 1500-plus effects shots and a visual marvel of a movie that still stands up to this very day.

No word on whether the 300 TV series will employ the same technology or go the route of something else. Since 2006, major TV series like the groundbreaking The Mandalorian have used different effects processes – like The Volume – to great effect. Maybe they’ll go a similar route with this? Either way, we keep you posted.
