While Moonlight may have devoured the majority of the top awards at Gotham earlier this week, Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester By The Sea proved to be the top movie for the National Board Of Review. The film, which was highly praised at TIFF on these very pages, bagged the Best Film, Best Actor (for Casey Affleck), and Best Original Screenplay awards. Barry Jenkins did however pick up the Best Director honour for Moonlight.

Amy Adams won Best Actress for Arrival, while Jeff Bridges took supporting actor for Hell Or High Water, and Naomie Harris for best supporting actress for her outstanding turn in Moonlight.

This pretty much levels the field for the run for Best Film at the Oscars so far, with both Moonlight and Manchester By The Sea sharing top honours so far on the awards run. Casey Affleck looks like an absolute cert for the actor categories, but there’s a long way to go until February when the Academy Awards polish things off for the year.
