When it comes to the silver screen, we love the tension that comes with watching the misfortunes of others, especially whilst sitting safely behind our locked composite doors! Not so much luck for these characters though! From comedies to horror and even big budget action films, we check out 5 of the top films featuring home invasions. Be sure to lock those doors!

Home Alone

One of the most loved comedies of the 90’s, Home Alone stars Macaulay Culkin as Kevin Mcallister, who accidentally gets left behind as his family fly off to Paris for their Christmas Vacation. The film also stars Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern as Harry & Marv, “The Wet Bandits” who constantly find themselves outwitted at every turn by Kevin and his penchant for setting booby traps around the house.

Panic Room

This 2002 David Fincher film starred Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart as a mother and daughter who move into a new home in the Upper West Side of New York City. After discovering their new home has a reinforced Panic Room, the house is broken into by Burnham (Forest Whitaker), Raoul (Dwight Yoakam) and Junior (Jared Leto) who are looking for $3 million dollars in bearer bonds left by the original owner, who also happens to be Burnham’s Grandparent.

The Purge

This 2013 dystopian horror stars Lena Headey and Ethan Hawke fighting to protect their family on a national holiday entitled “The Purge”, a 12 hour period where all crimes are legalized. After putting their home under lockdown, the family’s eldest son takes pity on an injured man, bringing him into their house only to find the man’s attackers don’t take too kindly to having their victim protected. The film spawned two sequels, The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year.

Skyfall

The 23rd Bond film produced by 007’s long standing Production Company Eon Productions find James Bond investigating a series of violent and dangerous terrorist attacks. The story sees Bond returning to his childhood home of Skyfall Lodge in Scotland to lure cyber terrorist Raoul Silva into a trap. Booby trapping the house, Bond manages to kill most of Silva’s men until he arrives with back up via helicopter to make for an explosive finale.

The Strangers

This 2008 horror stars Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as Kristen and James, a couple who travel to James’s childhood summer home after a long evening at a friend’s wedding reception. After noticing weird happenings around the house, the couple are eventually attacked and terrorized by three masked assailants. Inspired by real events in director Brian Bertino’s childhood, it is said that when he was younger, a stranger knocked on his door and asked for somebody who didn’t live there, only for the family to find out that other houses in the neighbourhood had been burgled the same night.
