Eighth Harry Potter film a possibility: Warner Brothers register ‘movie trademark’ in the UK.
Rumours of a planned eighth Harry Potter film have resurfaced once again.
Editor’s note – By an eighth Harry Potter film, we mean eighth Harry Potter story – we’re aware that there are eight films already in existence as Deathly Hallows was split into two. Apologies for the confusion.
There are a ton of rumours circling the internet this morning that Warner Brothers are set to being and eighth Harry Potter film to the screen. Where have these rumours come from? It comes from the studio apparently registering an official trademark on IPO.Gov of course.
Warner Brothers delivered seven near-perfect Harry Potter movies over the past couple of decades, the last of which was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011. There is also a stage production named Harry Potter and the Cursed Child currently in previews in London’s West End – it opens officially at the end of the month. Are they looking to make this into the official eighth Harry Potter film?
Rowling herself denied such a possibility, but the WB have registered a trademark for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in the UK that includes “motion picture films featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure and/or animation, and motion picture films for broadcast on television featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure and/or animation; audio video discs, and digital versatile discs featuring music, comedy, drama, action, adventure, and/or animation.”
We imagine that this is just precautionary – just in case they do decide to go make a movie sometime in the future, but interesting nonetheless.
You heard wrong, I’m afraid. #CursedChild is a play. #FantasticBeasts will be 3 movies, though! https://t.co/7tvw4rolcR

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child takes place 19 years after the events of the last Harry Potter movie, and is officially set to open (in two parts) on July 30th.
Here’s the plot:
It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.
You can find out more about the play over here.
