What will link all of the future Star Wars movies?

We’re getting quite excited now. A new Star Wars movie will arrive in cinemas in just over two months time. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will kick off a new trilogy in the saga, and we’re also promised three spin-off films, the first of which will arrive in just over a year’s time with Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars story.

The big question hanging over the movies however, is how will all of these future movies be linked? Luckily, Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy has just cleared that up for us.

Speaking with Costco Connection, Kennedy, who is president of Lucasfilm, had this to say.

“The saga films focus on the Skywalker family,” she said. “The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. ‘The Force Awakens’ follows ‘Return of the Jedi’ and continues that generational story. The Anthology films offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe.”

Awesome. So, more Skywalker family members? Or just movies set in their universe with stories that don’t necessarily offer continuity entirely with the main saga? Who knows.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released on December 18 pretty much everywhere, unless you live in the UK where you’ll get it a day earlier. That will be followed on December 16, 2016 by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Then we’ll have Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII, which arrives on May 26, 2017, and then Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Han Solo anthology movie hitting May 25, 2018. Then, Colin Trevorrow will release Episode IX in 2019. I’m guessing December for that one too.
