Brad Peyton, the director of this year’s disaster epic San Andreas, is to reteam with that film’s star Dwayne Johnson for the big screen adaptation of the video game Rampage. The duo, who previously worked on Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which we thought was pretty good, will tackle the film version of the arcade classic, whih is written by Non-Stop scribe Ryan Engle.
The film is expected to start shooting next summer for a 2017 release.
Dwayne Johnson is currently shooting Central Intelligence with Kevin Hart (where he did this), and will next tackle the eighth film in The Fast and Furious series.
Rampage will see him take on a gorilla, a lizard and a wolf as they wreak havoc across America. It is based on the 1986 Midway arcade classic of the same name. Remember this?
It will be interesting what Peyton and Johnson do with the movie version of the game. If their massive 2015 movie San Andreas is anything to go by, we’re in for a tongue-in-cheek action adventure that just might be a highlight of 2017.
Speaking of San Andreas, the film has just made over $460 million worldwide, making it Warner Bros’ top grosser of the year so far, and indeed the highest grossing original movie of the year too. Not bad work. We’re sure a greenlight for a sequel is imminent.
Johnson can currently be seen on HBO’s brand new one-camera series Ballers.
