If only it were more often that an anime series was more rooted in realistic and sweet drama. They do it so well, and yet it is over the top action and male fantasy romances that usually dominate the medium. Usagi Drop is one series that is firmly rooted in reality and tells a story of simplicity but with complex emotions.

Daikichi (Tsuchida) attends his father’s funeral to discover the deceased had an illegitimate child who is only 6 years old. Discovering he has an Aunt 24 years his junior is a shock to both Daikichi and the rest of the family, but things become complicated when it transpires the mother has left the child and it is up to Daikichi to look after and raise the young girl, Rin (Matsura). What follows is a simply gorgeous tale of responsibility, family, and love. The bond between Daikichi and Rin grows, and Daikichi begins to adapt his life around Rin.

These adaptations are certainly shown as sacrifices, until Daikichi also finds joy from them too. It’s this gradual evolution that is a joy to behold, as is Daikichi as a character in general. The series delights in how it overcomes difficulties, rather than wallowing in conflict for the sense of drama, culminating in a rather adult show without risque material. No doubt this can be enjoyed by all ages, but it will probably strike a chord with an older audience.

The animation is constantly beautiful, and sometimes slips into a simple and effective style of resembling a water colour. The fact the show hasn’t been dubbed does it the world of good, allowing for a more authentic feel when dealing with Japanese customs. If anime series could be considered for Oscars, then this would easily win, and any studio wanting a guaranteed awards contender should consider a live-action telling of this charming tale.
