Attack On Titan finally arrives on DVD and Blu-ray and what hype it has to contend with. Pretty much heralded as the greatest thing to hit anime since that series about sliced bread, Attack On Titan brings a new series to the forefront with incredible visuals and a mouthwatering premise that is completely engrossing from the very first moments.

Set in the future after giants known as titans start to walk the Earth, we find ourselves in an enclosed city where humanity survives. It’s not much of a survival though, as many characters feel restricted by their current predicament. The show starts as it means to go on with a colossal titan (even bigger than the regulars) smashing through the walls, thus allowing for other titans to start eating the humans. It’s an incredibly tense way to open, and the whole series has a never ending feeling of dread. Once the titans are unleashed, it seems as though humanity is doomed, and the art style and animation does a grand job at making us feel tiny and pathetic.

Also making the show work so well in terms of horror are the titans. They look human but act incredibly vacant. As they kill and eat without apparent malice it becomes difficult to truly hate them, while their looks make them sinisterly relatable. Meanwhile the human characters are well fleshed out, although the dub does come off as extremely shouty and whiny at times.

Armed with incredible weapons, the humans are able to fly through the cities like Spider-Man, making every action sequence an incredible visual feast. The plot never stops moving forward, although sometimes thrilling sequences are interrupted by lengthy dialogue or upsetting cutaways. It’s no surprise that Attack On Titan has become such a huge hit as it does so much well. Great characters, incredible action, and nerve-shredding sequences all combine in a show that is bound to expand and develop into something remarkable.
