It’s only been two years since the last instalment but Lakeshore want to get a new broom in to clear away any cobwebs from the UNDERWORLD series and let new blood have a go on the cinematic jugular. Cory Goodman (whose upcoming project is THE LAST WITCH HUNTER with Vin Diesel) is charged with breathing fresh life into the vampires vs werewolves saga. Though known as a high octane blend of Lycan-on-undead action with bucketfuls of blood and bullets, the franchise is also famous for finding star Kate Beckinsale her life partner (writer/director Len Wiseman) and giving pasty-faced roles to cheque-collecting British thesps such as Bill Nighy and Sir Derek Jacobi.
Beckinsale appeared in three of the four chapters (with number three RISE OF THE LYCANS a prequel) and while it is unclear whether she will feature or be rebooted out the door it’s obvious her butt-kicking vamp Selene and her skin tight outfit are seen as key factors in getting the demographic into the multiplex. As for the plot, well it’s hard to see what new ground could be covered but Goodman could have some surprises up his sleeve. What’s becoming apparent is – just over a decade since the first movie hit – the gap between reimaginings is getting narrower and narrower.
