With all these strong young women of literature littering our screens, it’s nice to see the boys have a turn for once. Joining the futuristic, dystopian, survival genres of THE HUNGER GAMES and DIVERGENT, we’re now about to enter the world of THE MAZE RUNNER. In it, a young man with no memory awakens in a big field with a bunch of other young men, surrounding this field is a huge wall that leads into a maze, only those who go in rarely return. Dylan O’Brien leads with strong support from a menagerie of recognisable young Brits.
We might be reaching saturation point with such films based on YA novels, but THE MAZE RUNNER looks as though it could excel thanks to the very visual serving maze. The action sequences seem as though they could be riddled with tension, although it may be that this trailer has given away a bit too much. The dialogue also sounds a bit clunky with the constant use of story specific vocabulary. Hopefully this will continue that summer feeling into the early Autumn months.
Watch now:
THE MAZE RUNNER is released 19th September in the US and 10th October in the UK. It stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Patricia Clarkson, and Ki Hong Lee.
Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
