Laika have unfortunately been ignored when ut comes to the average Joe’s listing off of popular animation studios. However, their output is gradually proving to display a consistent and darker tone than the likes of Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks etc. With stop-motion animated films CORALINE and PARANORMAN raking in a combined gross of over $220 million, it seems as though we have every reason to see continued success from the company. Next up on Laika’s slate is THE BOXTROLLS, a film in which a young orphan boy is raised by the titular trolls.
The film caused some controversy with those of a right wing persuasion after suggesting in an early teaser that families could be made of same sex couples, but with nonsense like that ignored we can now focus on what looks to be a lovely animated feature. Directors Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi have had varied careers in different visual effects roles and animation departments, with the majority of Annable’s work being in the world of video games. The two have both worked with Laika before, so we can assume they’ve built up a level of trust and have proved themselves to the bigwigs.
THE BOXTROLLS arrives on 12th September 2014 in the UK and 26th September 2014 in the US. It stars the voices of Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Toni Collette, Nick Frost, Ben Kingsley, Tracy Morgan, Jared Harris, and Richard Ayoade.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
