Green Day Bassist To Produce Indie Drama ‘Crickets’

Mike Dirnt

Mike Dirnt, bassist and founding member of rock band Green Day, has signed on as producer for independent drama CRICKETS.

The story, focusing on two estranged brothers, one of whom is trying to come to terms with a terminal illness, was co-created by Alfredo Botello, a long-time friend of Dirnt. Botello will script the project, with Dirnt and Green Day’s manager Pat Magnarella producing.

Dirnt has commented on the news, stating:

“I’ve been – and a lot of people have been – affected by illnesses and it’s a very relatable thing…I’m just kind of tired of junk food movies. Here’s something that’s a feel good, feel bad and feel everything movie.”

Botello has furthered these sentiments, commenting on the film’s extensive planning:

“It’s something I’ve been working on a while back. I wanted to write something about the topic of death that was touching but not too sentimental.”

I’ve been a huge fan of Green Day (and of Dirnt) since I was 12, so to see him delve into another creative field is great. I can already sense this will be an emotional, personal project, especially for Mike whose wife was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. However, from the look of his Instagram account the pair are kicking cancer’s arse.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
