Oscar-winning Director Quentin Tarantino loses his legal battle against gossip website Gawker, who he accused of leaking his script, THE HATEFUL EIGHT.
A judge in the US said that Tarantino had failed to demonstrate direct infringement Gawker had made on his copyright and so, he cannot claim the $1 Million in compensation he was seeking. Gawker commented that “Tarantino himself set in motion the circumstances by which the script circulated” and this was by giving it to six people. The website also stated that they only posted a link to the leaked file from a website and as the script was already on the internet, it did not infringe upon the Director’s right for first publication. The judge however, has given Tarantino’s legal team another chance to provide more evidence by the end of the month.
It was in January this year that it was announced Tarantino’s script was leaked unexpectedly on the internet for anyone’s eyes to see. It was then after hearing the news, the disappointed DJANGO UNCHAINED director threw in the towel and announced he wasn’t going to make any attempt on the film. However, recently in April during a live reading of the script in Los Angeles with actors, Samuel L Jackson and Michael Madsen, he hinted to the audience that THE HATEFUL EIGHT may be made after all. Good news indeed!
