Paul Bettany has been with the Marvel cinematic universe since the very beginning, taking on the role of Tony Stark’s AI butler J.A.R.V.I.S. However, it seems as though vocal work just isn’t enough, and although rumours have persisted for months regarding Bettany’s promotion to physicality in the form of The Vision in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, there was never any real official confirmation. Now Paul Bettany has gone on record commenting on his role during a live performance on the Jimmy Kimmel show to promote TRANSCENDENCE:
It’s very exciting for me, but everything is a double edged sword, right? Because I was playing J.A.R.V.I.S. for years and my job was I would turn up at a recording studio for 45 minutes, do all my stuff, and then they would give ma huge bag of cash and then I’d go home. Now it turns out they’ve found me out and they want me to actually do something!
The Vision is a robot created by another robot, the titular bad guy Ultron. He’ll probably start bad and turn good, but comic knowledge won’t help with this instalment as it has already been confirmed that Ultron’s origins are changing. Not a surprise considering Ultron was created by Hank Pym A.K.A. ANT-MAN, and his film won’t hit until after the release of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. Paul Bettany is also keeping quiet on his role:
I can do all sorts of things, but I’m not allowed to really talk about them and what we’re going to do because there might be a Marvel agent in the room who will actually wrestle me to the ground and fire me.
I love Bettany as an actor and believe his vocal work has brought so much life to the Marvel movies. Hopefully his physical presence can bring even more.
