First, he made DJANGO UNCHAINED; then, he cited THE LONE RANGER in his top films of 2013 so far. It’s clear Quentin Tarantino loves a good Western, so it’s no surprise to hear his next project will see him return to the oft-forgotten genre.
The acclaimed director of such classics as PULP FICTION, RESERVOIR DOGS and INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to promote a graphic novel adaptation of DJANGO, where he revealed the genre of his next project – and also confirmed that it won’t be a sequel to the Jamie Foxx-starring DJANGO, released earlier this year in the UK.
Tarantino professed his love for the genre to Leno:
‘I love westerns so much, after I taught myself to make one, it’s like ‘Now let me make another one, now I know what I’m doing.”
This isn’t the first time Tarantino’s spoken about returning the Western genre, though it is the first time we’ve had anything concrete. Back in 2012, he told The Guardian:
‘I’d like to do a couple more, dealing with the same issue: but different story, different characters.’
Tarantino once spoke about doing a film based on John Brown, the abolitionist who tried to lead a slave revolt in 1859, so there’s a chance that the director could revisit the themes of slavery in that sense. Of course, he’s had a year to think about it, so he could have something else entirely in store for us by this point.
Time will tell, but hopefully Quentin Tarantino will have learnt plenty of lessons from DJANGO UNCHAINED, and won’t drag his next film out unnecessarily (and will keep the dodgy Australian accent to a minimum).
