It seems like things are finally starting to move forward with the long delayed TERMINATOR 5 as casting is well underway on the science fiction sequel. Although THOR: THE DARK WORLD’s Alan Taylor is still unconfirmed as director of the film, it seems all but official at this point with screen tests due to take place next week.
The original TERMINATOR and its sequel directed by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, are heralded are two of the greatest genre films of all time. TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES and TERMINATOR SALVATION however gained incredibly mixed reception from both fans and critics despite Schwarzenegger and Christian Bale’s involvement. The upcoming fifth film in the series is being labelled as a reboot of sorts with time travel no doubt playing a vital role due to the age of the actors and actresses wanted for the sequel.
Earlier in the week, we reported Emilia Clarke (GAME OF THRONES), Brie Larson (21 JUMP STREET) and Margot Robbie (THE WOLF OF WALL STREET) are said to be testing for the role of Sarah Connor, the character was originally played by Linda Hamilton. Garrett Hedlund (TRON: LEGACY) and Boyd Holbrook (THE HOST) were on the shortlist for John Connor but that is now thought to be for the role of Kyle Reese, the father of John Connor who was originally played by Michael Beihn. We can also add BATTLESHIP’s Taylor Kitsch and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS star Nicholas Hoult to that list!
The most interesting part however is that Tom Hardy is apparently top of Alan Taylor’s wishlist for Connor, although a meeting is yet to take place. Hardy has previously starred in BRONSON, WARRIOR, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and the upcoming MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. It would be great to see the incredibly talented actor take on the role of John Connor, not to mention the fact that he would bring credibility and star power to the already dubious project.
The only thing we do know about the science fiction reboot/sequel is that the mighty Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to return as the title character (thank god), in the mean time check back with The Hollywood News for more updates on TERMINATOR 5.
