James DeMonaco Targets More Home Invasion Horror With ‘The Purge 2’

The surprising success of Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes’ intense shocker THE PURGE assured a sequel was always going to be green lit. We can now confirm the original’s writer and director James DeMonaco is returning to helm of the follow-up film, which is expected to shoot before the end of the year.

THE PURGE starred Ethan Hawke and British beauty Lena Headey as the parents of a near-future family who are targeted by a gang of sadistic teenagers after coming to the aid of man during an annual period of the year when all and any crime is legal for 12 hours. The film, which I thought did something unique and original with an often tired format, was made for only $3 million and went on to gross $87 million worldwide. Opening at the top of the US box-office with a first weekend of $34 million!

The sequel will get a $2.25 million tax credit from the state of California, providing THE PURGE 2 begins production by the end of 2013.  Something the studio are committed to. No word on any of the returning cast as yet.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
