Having seen latest instalment in the CHILD’S PLAY franchise, CURSE OF CHUCKY, I can honestly say it’s a return to form for the pint-sized psychopath. I’ve a soft spot for the demonic doll franchise (simply because they’re fun as hell) and this entry is much darker in tone and a lot closer to the original. The comedic elements are still there and it’s a plot coming full circle so fans of the whole series will lap it up. It’s probably my favourite of all six films and just a hint… stay after the credits as it’s a blast!
CURSE OF CHUCKY is directed by original creator Don Mancini, writer of all previous instalments and who made his directorial debut with SEED OF CHUCKY. Returning to lend his unmistakable tones as the voice of the little ‘Good Guy’ is the brilliant Brad Dourif and here we have his mischievous and miniature murderer invading four of Universal’s horror hits just to remind us Chucky’s back!
Nica (Fiona Dourif) is grieving over the gruesome suicide of her mother when her domineering older sister Barb (Danielle Bisutti) arrives with her young family in tow to help settle their mother’s affairs. As the sisters butt heads over Nica’s plans for the future, Barb’s young daughter comforts herself with a grinning, red-haired talking doll named Chucky (voiced again by Brad Dourif) that recently arrived mysteriously in the mail. But as a string of brutal murders begins to terrorize the household, Nica suspects the doll may hold the key to the bloodshed. What she doesn’t know is that Chucky has a personal score to settle. He’s determined to finish a job he started more than 20 years earlier, and this time he’s going to see it through to the bloody and shocking end.
CURSE OF CHUCKY is released on UK Blu-ray/DVD on the 8th October. It hits the UK 21st October. Just in time for Halloween!
Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
