Earlier this year I was blown away by THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, the follow-up to BLUE VALENTINE, from director Derek Cianfrance. Anyone who knows me well enough understands that I’m quite protective over BLUE VALENTINE, with it being ‘my’ favourite film (this is what happens when a film isn’t given a theatrical release in my town, forcing me to find other ways of viewing it). Both films pull at my heartstrings, so to hear that Cianfrance has already lined up his next project can only be a good thing.
Reports have surfaced that he’s moving on to an adaptation of The Light Between Oceans, written by ML Stedman. Based in 1920s Australia, newlywed couple Tom and Izzy take residence of a tiny island, living inside its lighthouse. They soon get to work trying to expand their family, only for each attempt to fail. However, one day a boat is washed ashore, carrying with it the body of a man…and a crying, healthy infant. Trouble can only follow…
The book has been heralded a wonder, so Cianfrance has obviously picked a winner. I wonder if two-time collaborator Ryan Gosling will make an appearance? I hope so!
Have you read The Light Between Oceans? What did you think? Do you think it will translate well to the big screen?

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
