We’ve just posted some new and exclusive character posters for their next big movie VENDETTA, but Richwater Films have also released a press release today stating that they have signed up a director to take on their next project, the Leo Gregory starrer TOP DOG. The filmmaker lined up to take on the job is none other than Martin Kemp, director of the horror STALKER, and member of celebrated band Spandau Ballet.

We’ve posted the official release from Richwater Films below, which tells us a little more about the project.

London. Celebrated actor/musician Martin Kemp has been announced as the director of forthcoming British crime epic TOP DOG, based on the cult novel by Dougie Brimson (Green Street). Leo Gregory (Wild Bill) is attached to star. Jonathan Sothcott produces for Richwater Films (Vendetta).

Described as ‘The Long Good Friday meets Rise of the Footsoldier’, Top Dog is the story of hooligan gang leader Billy Evans. Billy is above the law. He knows it, and they know it. And when you regard the law as an irrelevance, all kinds of opportunities can open up for you. Especially when you begin to exert your increasingly powerful influence over the back street pubs and clubs of East London. But he’s about to discover that this time, he’s finally pushed his luck too far. And now it isn’t the law he’ll have to contend with. It’s something far more dangerous.

Kemp commented “I’m thrilled to be directing TOP DOG, I can’t wait to get back behind the camera. Every so often something really special comes along, and this is it.”

Kemp previously directed cult thriller Stalker (also produced by Jonathan Sothcott) which swept the board at The British Horror Film Awards (including ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’ for Kemp) and is released in the USA later this year.

Producer Jonathan Sothcott commented “in our ambition to make the definitive hooligan movie, finding the right director was the last and perhaps most important part of the puzzle. I know from working with Martin over many years that his passion and very real skill as a film-maker will ensure that Top Dog becomes the ultimate lads film. “

Filming on Top Dog begins in November. The film will be released in the UK in 2014 by Universal Pictures UK, part of Universal Pictures International Entertainment – the home entertainment division of NBC Universal.
